Urgyen Sangharakshita (1925–2018) was a renowned British Buddhist teacher, author, and visionary who played a pivotal role in bringing Buddhism to the West. He spent over 20 years in India, where he studied deeply with teachers from various Buddhist traditions, and later returned to the UK to share those teachings in a modern, accessible way.
As the founder of the Triratna Buddhist Community, he emphasized the importance of Friendship, Spiritual Practice, and Ethical Living as pillars of a meaningful life. His inclusive approach welcomed people of all backgrounds, genders, and walks of life — removing barriers and reviving the Buddha’s universal message of wisdom and compassion. Sangharakshita’s legacy is deeply woven into the values and vision we nurture here at Urgyen Sangharakshita International School.
